Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, May 21, 2025) – detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Missing persons Unit and Homicide Unit are investigating a 2016 case that originated in the 9900 block of Clairemore Place in the North Division.
On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, shortly after 1 p.m., officers responded too a Missing Person Call for Service. Upon arrival, officers were informed that Lee Anthony Funderburk, 53, was missing and filed a report.
Detectives continued to investigate incoming leads over the years but were unable to locate Mr. Funderburk.
On wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a scrapyard regarding skeletal remains that were found on the property.
Investigators with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) began processing the crime scene. During the investigation, detectives discovered remains in a vehicle that was registered to Mattie Mae Funderburk, Mr. Funderburk’s mother. The remains were later identified as Lee Anthony Funderburk. His cause of death was steadfast to be homicide.
Mr. Funderburk’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
